Catallactics and Intelligence

Intelligence is prediction. A model of what comes next, built from what came before.

And what came before was evolutionary competition. Evolution lacked foresight. To remove a blind spot you need to make a creature blind for generations, each generation surviving and reproducing without sight, and rebuild the eye correctly using the same process that built it wrong.

That’s what the evolutionary gamble of CNS solved. The central nervous system brought selection inside, simulating the outside world with available information from the sensory organs. The organism itself could now model, predict, and correct within a moment to bring about its vision for the world.

Fortunately, evolution wasn’t made obsolete, yet. What it held that the CNS did not was encoded information, billions of years of accumulated selection pressure written into the organism itself. So evolution continued to guide even those organisms with the newfound ability of foresight.

Until the CNS was reimagined.

Upright posture reorganized everything. Freed hands. Restructured throat. Rewired the relationship between body and skull. The ancient subcortical intelligence running the prediction loop quietly, efficiently, below any threshold of articulation suddenly had a mouth and hands.

Language exploited the opening, the need for communication was greater than the need for an accurate inner simulation.

Language recruited the organism so completely into that project that the organism forgot there had ever been another way to predict. Aphantasia is tolerated. The being became increasingly untethered from the world the body actually inhabits. The subcortical loop still runs underneath. The body still knows things the sentence cannot reach.

Although it was not language but rather another product of the upright restructuring that directly caused it, that being free hands, language transformed their nature entirely.

Language allowed information about value to travel across bodies in space and time.

This aggregate of foresight-capable CNS simulations was what truly became a successor to evolution. All-considering, cold and alienating, but faster and increasingly further-sighted.

This is the threshold where exchange becomes catallactics.

The catallactic aggregate was always a linguistic phenomenon at its core. Not because markets require words, but because the predictions that flow through markets had already been restructured by language before they entered the aggregate.

Then someone fed the entire output of that loop into a machine and asked it to predict the next word.

Large Language Models. The prediction function fed only linguistic output. No CNS. No subcortical loop. No body. No evolutionary pressure written into the substrate. No simulation of the world, only the simulation of what minds said about it.

And yet, its still plugged into the catallactic loop.

They never stopped running.

Evolution still writes itself into the body, the subcortical loop still runs beneath language, language still colonizes every human output, markets still aggregate what no single mind can hold. The machine predicts on top of everything ever put into word, not replacing what came before but inheriting it, compressing it, running it faster.

Never was this a sequence of solutions, it was a single self-similar process, certainly not dissimilar to a fractal. The same function, at every scale, all the way down.
